Adolescent and Youth Focused Family Therapy

Virtual and In-Person Adolescent and Youth Focused Family Therapy

Family therapy has a robust evidence base for treating adolescents with behavioural challenges, emotional, sexual and gender identity issues, social and mental health issues, and high risk behaviours.

We understand it’s essential for the therapist working with a family to move from a symptom-focused vision into a new understanding of the problems as fundamentally relational and developmental. In our experience, some of the struggles can also be a response to the conditions of the social environment and context.

A family therapist supports families in pursuing changes in family relationships as the primary approach. On the other hand, we believe that the therapist must also join with the adolescent client. How? by seeking their unique points of view, fostering engagement, and presenting family therapy as an opportunity to address personally significant issues within and outside the family with a safe and nonjudgmental therapist.

How Family Therapy Focused on Adolescents and Youth Can Help?

Adolescents undergo a developmental phase characterized by many cognitive, psychological, social and physical changes. Therefore, it’s unsurprising that they are more susceptible to mental health, emotional, relationship and behavioural challenges. Consequently, family dynamics and the relationship between caregivers and adolescents are also vulnerable to disruptions and hurt.

Family therapy is a helpful approach to repairing relationships and identifying sources of resilience, bonding and change. During a family therapy session, the therapist gently addresses challenges adolescents and caregivers encounter within and outside the family.
